What is THC?

THC is probably the best known cannabinoid due to its psychoactive properties, which have largely been associated with euphoria. THC affects cognition, appetite, perceptions and mood, and in addition to the feeling of being “high,” THC also has many medicinal properties. For instance, that same sensation that creates the infamous “munchies” is also what helps to ease nausea and stimulate appetite in those going through chemotherapy and AIDS patients. Additionally, THC is a strong anti-inflammatory, its short-term effects have been shown to improve anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, it’s used to treat both neuropathic and temporary pain, it aids those with sleep disorders and more.

What is CBD?

CBD is another well-known cannabinoid, but unlike THC, CBD does not have psychoactive properties, which means that it won't’ make you feel “high.” CBD can come from both marijuana and hemp plants, and it can be isolated or emphasized in medical marijuana to match the user’s preferences. CBD has so many medical uses. For instance, in 2012 the British Epilepsy Association published a paper that concluded that CBD is an effective therapy for epileptic seizures. Studies have also delved into using CBD to treat serious neurologic disorders, like Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s. CBD, like THC, has also been shown to improve mood disorders, like PTSD, stress disorders and anxiety, as well as to reduce inflammation.

The Many Ways You Can Use Medical Marijuana

When people think of medical marijuana, they often imagine someone coughing up a lung after hitting a bong or smoking a pipe; however, smoking is just one of the many ways that you can take medical marijuana. And, while smoking marijuana has been shown to be far less dangerous than smoking cigarettes, smoking in itself still produces tar, which can irritate your lungs and cause chronic bronchitis in regular smokers. If you’re not keen on the idea of smoking, here are a few other popular ways that you can use medical marijuana:

  • Vaporizing - A marijuana vaporizer works similarly to a nebulizer treatment. The medical marijuana is heated to very high temperatures, which releases the medication in the form of vapors that can be inhaled.
  • Edibles - Marijuana can be baked into all kinds of edible treats, including chocolates, brownies, gummies, cookies, teas, sodas, lollipops and more. Before deciding on edibles, though, keep in mind that it can take up to two hours before you’ll feel the effects.
  • Pills - Some medical marijuana users prefer to use marijuana more like regular medications, in ingestible pill form.
  • Oils and Tinctures - Marijuana can be made into oils and tinctures that can be sprayed into the mouth or dropped under the tongue. With tinctures and oils, the medication is delivered into the bloodstream right away, and you get quick relief.
  • Topical Applications - For people taking medical marijuana to treat arthritis, chronic muscle pain and inflammation, the best method of delivery may be topical, through lotions, ointments or poultices.

Smoking is probably the most well-known way to consume medical marijuana, but there are many different delivery methods you can choose from, depending on the ailment you’re treating, as well as your comfort level. If you have questions or concerns, or you’re interested in getting a medical marijuana prescription card in Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Arlington, Richmond or the surrounding areas, contact our medical marijuana doctor at My Anti Aging MD today.

How does medical marijuana help?

Before you make the decision to start using medical marijuana, it’s important to understand how it works. The cannabinoids in medical marijuana, which are the active chemicals, are strikingly similar to the chemicals made by your body that are related to memory, pain, appetite and movement. Of the 113 cannabinoids in marijuana, the two most important for medical purposes are called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), and they help to make the natural chemicals produced by your body work more efficiently.
